What HR professionals don't tell you about their job: We carry the weight of everyone's worst days at work- From layoffs to harassment complaints to mental health crises, we absorb the emotional toll of workplace trauma while maintaining a composed, professional facade. The loneliness is real - We're often excluded from office friendships because people see us as "management" or worry we'll report casual conversations, leaving us professionally isolated even in busy workplaces. We lose sleep over decisions that affect people's livelihoods- Behind every termination, restructuring, or policy change are real people with families and bills, and that human impact weighs heavily on us long after we leave the office. HR professionals need better support systems too. We're expected to be the emotional backbone of organizations while often lacking access to our own mental health resources, peer support networks, or safe spaces to process the difficult situations we navigate daily. Investing in HR wellbeing isn't just good for us—it's essential for creating healthier workplaces for everyone. #humanreaources #thestratetichrcoach #emotion

Who do you address this to? To managers which pay those wages to have comfortable fire fighting secretaries instead of professionals? Or us HR, who have exchanged our personal development for blindly following instructions system as long as our personal comfort is not disturbed? Both are corrupt so we deserve each other ??

So very true. It’s important that HR use the resources that are available to them; they are employees too. Years ago, early in my HR career, working in employee relations, two employees committed suicide, the day after I met with them. I was emotional distraught; questioning what could I have done differently? After referring several employees to our EAP program for various problems over the years; I finally called for myself. It was the best call I could’ve made.

This captures it perfectly. So much of HR happens in the quiet, holding space for others while carrying things silently ourselves. The decisions that keep us up at night. The conversations we replay. The emotional labour that doesn’t fit on a job description. We’re often the first to step in, and the last to be checked on. That’s why I believe so strongly in compassionate leadership, peer support, and creating spaces where HR professionals can feel seen too. If you’re in HR and quietly holding a lot right now, you’re not alone. Support exists, and you deserve to access it. That might look like: ? Reflective supervision ? HR-specific coaching or mentoring ? Safe, off-the-record peer groups ? Mental health support just for HR leaders Because if we want to build healthier workplaces, we have to start by looking after those holding the foundations up. #TheHumanApproach #HRWellbeing #LeadershipWithHeart #PeopleFirst #CompassionateLeadership #LifeInHR

Beautifully written, Reanette! HR is navigating emotional wellness of the organization but we need to remember to put our oxygen mask on first! Supporting your HR can look as simple as asking how THEY are!??

I have a family member (engineer) that was required to take a 6-month rotation in HR when they reached a certain management level in their organization. It was an eye-opening if sometimes painful experience for them, but was mutually beneficial. In the 6 months they gained a first-hand understanding of some of the challenges of the HR function and were able to help HR evolve to better meet the needs of the business.
