Meet James, a member of the Step Up community?? Despite his business’s success, in 2020, something happened that James never expected - the COVID-19 pandemic. Like countless other people across the world, James' life drastically changed amid the outbreak, and his life as he once knew it quickly vanished. Because of the incredible contributions from our generous donors, volunteers, and dedicated team, in December of 2022, Step Up opened a new permanent supportive housing development in James' community, and he finally caught the break he needed. This month recognizes the unique mental health challenges faced by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. These communities often experience systemic barriers to care. At Step Up, we believe mental wellness should be accessible to everyone. While our services are open to all, we’re proud that our member population includes substantial representation from BIPOC communities. This reflects our ongoing commitment to addressing long-standing inequities in access to care. By offering person-centered, culturally responsive mental health services, we’re working to ensure that every individual has the support they need to heal and thrive. #BIPOCMentalHealthMonth #MentalHealthEquity #StepUpForMentalHealth #WellnessForAll #MentalHealthAwareness

This 4th of July, while many are celebrating with friends and family, we pause to reflect on the deeper meaning of freedom and connection. At Step Up, we know that for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness and serious mental health conditions, reunification and personal independence are hard-won milestones, not guarantees. As you spend time with your family and friends today, we invite you to think about those who can’t. Your support helps bring people one step closer to stable housing, restored relationships, and renewed hope. Together, we can help more people find their way home. #FourthofJuly #IndependenceDay #JulyFourth

Samuel’s story is a powerful reminder that permanent housing is not the end goal. It’s the foundation. After growing up in a low-income community and experiencing homelessness in his teens, Samuel spent years cycling through shelters, hospitals, and temporary situations while managing a serious mental health condition. It wasn’t until he was connected to Step Up that things truly began to shift. With access to permanent housing, consistent mental health care, life skills coaching, and employment support, Samuel began to build a new life, one rooted in stability and self-worth. Today, he is working part-time, pursuing a degree in social work, and preparing for a future where he can support others who feel overlooked by the same system he once felt trapped in. “Without housing first, there’s no way I could have felt the way I do now.” His progress is proof that long-term support works. Recovery is possible when individuals are met with housing, dignity, and opportunity.
